“The mind is for having ideas, not for holding them.” – David Allen
There’s no shortage of methods and tools for productivity, but there are certain characteristics freelancers should first strive to develop which can help you get into a productivity mindset.
So how do you do this? Well, there are nine key traits that you need to nurture in order to become a fully-fledged Productivity Ninja!
Develop Zen-like calm
Zen is the ability to remain focused and not be stressed by all the things you’re not doing. Singularity of purpose it what it’s all about.
Be more ruthless in your focus
Say ‘no’ to as many distractions as possible. Turn off the TV, close that Twitter tab and just get on with it!
Be weapons savvy
Know what tools to use, but make sure they save you time, not provide distractions.
Camouflage yourself
There times when working alone, away from the limelight, might be more productive. A healthy mix of coworking and working from home can be just the ticket.
Be unorthodox
Challenge the status quo. Just because something has historically been done one way, does that make it the best way?
Be agile
Plan ahead and have good systems to help you react and respond quickly. Don’t be afraid to drop something that doesn’t work and start again.
Be mindful
Are you a good listener to yourselves and to others?
Be prepared
But know that rest, relaxation and good organisation skills are important.
Be human, not superhuman
Superheroes only exist in the movies, and you’ve got real work to do.
We live in an age of constant connection and information overload. In the real world the traditional time management theories of old no longer cut it. Attention Management is the new key to productivity. How well you protect and use your attention determines your success. Your goal in managing your attention is to create playful productive momentum and control, limiting stress, and being confident that you’re making the best decisions you can. It’s time to think like a Ninja!
If you’re interested you can read more about attention management in How to be Productivity Ninja, available now on Amazon.
